--- Held on the last Sunday of June each year, the Hakodate Marathon takes runners through the beautiful coastline and iconic landmarks of Hakodate City in Hokkaido. Since 2016, the event has featured both full and half marathon courses, building on the long-standing tradition of the former Hakodate Half Marathon. The full marathon is known as "Japan's Toughest Fun Run" (日本一過酷なファンラン), characterized by continuous climbs and descents. Starting from Chiyodai Park Athletic Stadium, the course passes through the city's major attractions: Isaribi-dori coastal road with views of Mount Hakodate and the Tsugaru Strait, Hakodate Airport, Tomoe Bridge, and the historic red brick warehouses in the Bay Area. The half marathon offers a flat, fast course ideal for setting personal records. Another highlight of the event is the generous aid stations serving Hokkaido specialties such as Hakodate umeboshi, seafood rice bowls, cold ramen, and white chocolate. Over 3,000 volunteers and enthusiastic local supporters cheer on the runners throughout the course. The event accommodates approximately 8,000 participants across both distances.
